Mayers immediately contributed as a member of the weekend rotation in 2023, pitching to a 2.02 ERA with impressive 105 strikeouts across 75.2 innings. He relied heavily on a 93-96 mph fastball that touched 97 that he threw 89% of the time. It averaged a ridiculous 23 inches of ride and got tons of swing and misses. Mayers’ slider showed promise in its limited usage and could be a plus pitch down the road. Mayers’ key in 2024 is developing his secondaries. -

While his stuff is big, his ERA ballooned to 4.58 due in large part to the 76 walks he issued across 70.2 innings. Mayers relies heavily on a 93-96 mph fastball that has been up to 97 and averaged over 24 inches of ride. Mayers’ slider has shown promise in its limited usage and could be a plus pitch down the road. As he heads to Baton Rouge, Mayers will need to continue to develop his secondary offerings and drastically improve in the strike-throwing department.
