With a lean, athletic 6-foot-2 frame, Zanetello has an impressive tool set to play in the middle of the field. Zanetello is a toolsy high school prospect who has been up-and-down as an offensive performer, but has plenty of upside thanks to a super projectable frame, solid bat speed and impact defensive ability at multiple positions that comes from some of the best pure athleticism in the class. As a hitter, Zanetello has shown better zone control than pure contact ability. He rarely chases out of the zone but also has shown swing-and-miss tendencies on pitches in the zone. He sets up with an even stance and gets his swing started with a small leg kick, and his bat path can get lengthy at times. He does drive the ball with authority when he connects, and his physical projection indicates exciting power upside to come. He’s a plus runner who looks strong in center field, where he reads the ball off the bat with good range and a strong arm, and has also done a nice job at shortstop, where he’s shown an ability to make difficult, body control plays with arm strength that works on the infield as well. Zanetello is committed to Arkansas and is young for the class—he turned 18 in May.

Track Record: Zanetello zoomed up 2023 draft boards as a high school senior thanks both to an excellent performance for Team USA in Mexico during the World Cup qualifiers and by standing out as an elite athlete with five-tool potential at showcase events, including the draft combine. The Red Sox drafted him 50th overall and nearly doubled slot value with a $3 million bonus to keep him away from Arkansas.
Scouting Report: Zanetello flashes the ability to do just about anything on a baseball field, with explosive athleticism suggesting a special ceiling. He possesses the super-quick hands and lean, athletic build to be a solid hitter with above-average to plus power. The catch is that his swing is still evolving after hitting .158 in his pro debut. His torso fires so quickly that it can get in front of his hands and cause his bat to flit in and out of the zone, an obvious area to tighten. Though raw defensively, Zanetello shows body control and actions that distinguish him from high school shortstops. He’s currently a plus runner who may lose some speed as he fills out.
The Future: Zanetello should spend the bulk of 2024 in Low-A Salem. He may experience a significant adjustment to the advanced pitching of pro ball, but the Red Sox believe his combination of tools, athleticism and fearlessness in the face of failure could eventually yield a high-impact, middle-of-the-field player.
